  • repair question: Tremolo Silvertone 1484

    Hi- New to forum-
also somewhat new to electronic amp repair-
but a long time player and the basic amp tweaks that entails-

I recently picked up a Silvertone 1484 head-
I re tubed carefully and sounds great-
    Tremolo works beautifully-
but it seems to be locked to max "Strength"-
Adjusting the Strength control does not change anything-
Tremolo continues to remain full on-
The speed control works perfectly as does the reverb
(if you want it call it reverb)-
wondering if this might be something I could fix myself-
before bringing it to an amp tech?

    thanks

    c

Maybe the Strength pot is gone... Do you know how to check a pot?

I suspect I will have to use my volt meter for the first time?
      all suggestions appreciated
How do I determine if the "pot" is malfunctioning?

According to this schematic the Strength pot should be a 100k pot.
I suppose it is a log taper (or audio) pot.
Set your meter to the appropriate ohm range and put one probe on the center lug and the other on one of the lateral lugs. With the pot fully turned in one direction you should read only very few ohms, while with the pot fully turned the other direction you should read around 100 kohms.

I re-flowed the solder over the 3 connections to that pot-
and full functionality returned to the Trem Strength control instantly-
Fantastic thick TREM - once again-
          Thanks- c
