  • toroid primary gone!

I lucked out and got a nice little toroid PT, 3 x 1.25, with dual 115v primaries and 320VAC and 20VAC secondaries ok for a preamp probably ($3!)

I went to strip the rather thick insulation and ...it must have been late.... as I pulled about 6" of wire out of one...

So I have a single pair of 115v primaries and 1/2 of the other....still get volts out but will the current out be less (1/2?) because I have no second primary to parallel?

I am really not looking forward to unwrapping the 50ft of plastic wound around this and reattaching the lead but at least I hadn't potted it yet....

    What would you do?

Kick myself and buy another one.

Some toroidal transformers have the primary on the inside and the secondaries wound over it, so you might have to unwrap the secondaries as well as the plastic. And yes, a missing primary will cut the rating roughly in half.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

      The sobering voice of Steve!

      Ugh, its as I feared!

I'll still try to fish it out...time is cheap and $3 toroids are not an off the shelf item...

Thanks Steve, as an aside, have you ever heard a Carr Vincent? I just found it has only PP film filter caps, maybe ~60uf total filtering!

        off comes plastic tape

        looks like amorphous metal sheild...Faraday?

YES! Wire broke at Litz-> magnet wire junction, and its still there!

22awg Ag plated copper looks HUGE

        soldered together

        yes!

put shield back on, silicone on solder joint and its ready to pot!
