    Some of Marshall's Valvestate amps have circuitry to raise the output impedance and provide more of a current drive to the speaker. This means that if you run them with no speaker, the power amp chips will be forced hard into clipping, as the current feedback tries to achieve the impossible, forcing the desired current through an open circuit.

    I don't know if this is a problem, but if it is, the solution is obviously to turn the master volume, presence and resonance controls to zero, no dummy load required.

    The Valvestate amps also have a reputation for being a bit temperamental and blowing up their power amps just because they feel like it, so the failure may have been a pure coincidence, not a result of the missing speaker load.
