  • Identify Vox capacitors?

Can anyone identify how these capacitors are color coded? It's an AC30 with solid state rectifiers.

    Here's some eek! stuff.

    Hi,

As to the caps' values, "tropical fish" caps' values are always expressed in picoFarads ( 1x10^-12 F ).

To read the value, starting from the top we have brown=1 - green = 5 - Yellow = 4 ( zeroes ) so the caps' value is 150000 pF ( or 150 nF, or 0.15 uF )

The fourth color from the top gives you the tolerance, in this case black = 20%.

The fifth color is the voltage rating, in this case yellow = 400 V.

The capacitor on the right in the pic is a 47000 pF ( or 47nF, or 0.047 uF ) one ( yellow-violet-orange ), same tolerance and voltage rating.

As to the manufacturer, I can't tell it by looking at the caps, but the amp's PCB layout and construction method makes me think of a "Rose-Morris" era AC30 ( late '70s/early '80s ), this seems to be confirmed by the pots' date codes ( 25th week - 1980 ), and Vox was still using English-made components at that time.

    Hope this helps

    Best regards

    Bob
