  • Bugera 333xl sounds bad suddenly

    Hello all.

Recently my Bugera 333xl 212 combos lead and crunch channels lost all of their "normal" sound. They went from both being very distinct to both almost sounding identical. If I set the gain and EQ at the same settings on both channels (all at 12 o clock) they sound almost exactly the same. The sound is very dull and lifeless compare to what it once was. The clean channel still sounds like it did to begin with and isn't affected as far as I can tell.

When I first purchased the amp one of the stock power tubes was bad so I replaced them with JJ 6l6's and everything was and sounded fine up until now. When i changed the tubes originally I did not re-bias, I only flipped the switch to 6l6 and went with it.

When I first noticed the problem I decided to order new power tubes (JJ 6l6 again) and a bias probe from eurotubes. I have the new tubes in now and set the bias to around 42. One thing to note is that I had to flip the switch to the EL34 setting as the 6l6 setting would only let me bias up to around 35 or so.

After doing this it made no difference in sound. Using the high or low gain inputs yields the same sound and also using different guitars with different pickups does not matter.

I typically use a Line 6 M13 in front of the amp for effects and I am wondering if that somehow damaged the amp? Far fetched I know but I am just curious as to what could have happened here. Being a Bugera I know anything is possible but the amp was fine for 6 months and then all of a sudden "went bad". For the testing on the amp, the Line 6 is completely out of the picture and I am going straight in. I've used different cables and also moved the amp to different locations to see if that would help to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I doubt very seriously that the line 6 caused any problems but you may want to try the line 6 into the return to insure the output section of the bugera is ok. Sounds like you either have a bad tube 12AX?, connection problem or maybe even some type of preamp maybe optoisolator problem. Is it under warranty and what are the chances of getting a schematic ?

The amp is still under warranty but I would rather try to fix it myself or at least understand what the problem might be before I sent it off and had to wait several weeks to get it back.

I tried the M13 and also a Pocket Pod going straight into the FX loop and it seems to sound ok.

Do you think it would be worth replacing the pre amp tubes?

Thought I'd report back in and say that having the pod and the m13 into the loop exibits the same dull sound as I experience on the crunch and lead channels. I thought it sounded ok at first but it seems pretty dull.

You're problem may be with the pod and not the amp. What does the amp sound like straight up. I would consider changing the preamps tubes one by one with a known good one.

              6L6 idle current

42 mas of idle current is pretty severe isn't it?

jazz p bass: 42 is what bugera recommends. When I first noticed the problem and ordered new tubes and the bias probe, I checked the bias after putting in the new tubes before making any adjustments and it was at 11. I've tried anywhere from under 11, 20 something, 30 something and all points in between before deciding to leave it on 42. No matter the setting it still sounds bad on the crunch and lead channels.

amp kat: Straight up the amp sounds bad. Going directly into the amp I have tried different guitars, both the high and low gain inputs, different cables, different locations and it never makes a difference. The more I listening even the clean channel straight up is sounding pretty dull.

I will order new preamp tubes today and swap them out. I appreciate the help.
