Hello.
I have just started doing my own recaps, resistor swaps and biasing on several amps I own.
I bought an 1970's marshall Mercury EL84 se which I have done all the replacement stuff and it sounds a lot better but I need help with the OT.
The soldering on the OT/speaker terminals was poor, frayed end wire and huge blobs of solder. Hence I'm sure some reall nod has rewired that terminal at some point.
The OT has only two output wires, a black and a yellow. As wired, the black lead connected to the red lead of the speaker and the yellow to the black
l;ead of the speaker.
Would a transformer ever have a black coloured wire for connecting to the hot of a speaker? Is there a way to find out which should connect to where?
The output impedence is 4 ohm and currently feeds a Celestion speaker which has the smallest magnet I have ever seen. I'm sure a better speaker would help project the sound but I don't want to buy a 4 ohm speaker I'd rather buy an 8ohm as all my speaker are 8 and I like to change them around.
So I was thinking of replacing the OT with a new one, Hammond seem to do a 5 watter with impedence taps but I have no idea what the impedence of the input side should be, From the net it seems somewhere around 3-5k.
Is there a way to establish what transformer I need or will anything around 3-5 k be OK for this amp.
