Hello group, I just got a new 1x12 combo. I have not pulled the chassis but it gives an almost burning kind of smell, is that normal with a brand new unit. Everything is seeming to function the way it should and everything sounds fine. But the smell is something that is on my mind. I really don't want to open up the brand new unit because I could send it back if there is a problem but if it is normal and they all do this and it goes away in a few days all is good. Let me know your experience if you have ever had an experience like this. Thanks for any feedback.

If you are talking about a tube combo, it can very well be normal. Due to the amount of synthetics used in most amps, the heat from the tubes can accelerate normal "outgassing" of plastics contained in the amp. This includes tube bases, powdercoating, vinyl coverings, cable insulation, circuit boards, etc. The variety of aromas produced can smell like something is burning.
Keep an eye on it, but if you don't see smoke and hear or see odd things happening, then all is most likely OK.

thank you
Ya it is a 1x12 tube combo it has it is 50 watts and has two 5881 tubes and 4 12ax7's. It don't seem to get hot to the touch or anything, just the funky smell. So I keep playing it. I even left it on for a couple hours today without playing. I have been playing it 75% volume, at first it started cutting out a little while playing just every now and then. I pushed the power tubes back in the socket, I think they fell a little bit during shipping and that helped alot. Everything now seems in order. I checked the bias it is right on. Thanks for your feedback.

tube clamps
It had the type that is like a thin springy washer bent up, like the kind used in my marshall. It was shipped all the way from china to the states. It think that is where it was made. They wern't real loose. One of the tubes only dropped probably an 1/8th of an inch. But I guess that is all it took to cause a little in and out of my signal. Once I re-installed it it worked fine. This is now day three and the smell has totally gone away and it still plays fine. I think I should be good to go. Thanks for your comments.
