    Help with Peavy Classic 50 4*10

    Hello all- I love tubes and electronics, but have never tried to mix the two. But I'm ok with a soldering gun, have very little budget and hope that you may suggest that I can fix my beloved Peavy...

    The symptoms are rather obvious- A few years ago, it occasionally made the crackle sound that comes from a shorted chord. The sound became more and more regular over the years and has recently hit the point where it continuously crackles and can't be played-

    I'm hoping that it just needs new tubes, but have never heard these symptoms for tubes- If so, would appreciate recommendations of similar tubes, because I love the sound of this amp-

    If it's more than tubes, can a guy who can follow a schematic troubleshoot without killing self?

    I'd verify it's not a tube issue first, swap out individually.

    If it's not a tube issue, then it's a solder issue. Haven't seen one yet that didn't need all the pc board jumper wires resoldered. There are three pc boards that are connected with several solid core jumper wires.

    A lot of soldering and tricky manouvering, but once done (and I'd also hit the filter caps, stand-off resistors, pots & jacks while in there) you'll have a long-lasting reliable little amp.

      Try plugging your guitar into the EFX RET jack.
      If the symptoms disappear than you have a preamp issue.

          Crackles and pops are a CLASSIC sign of failing power tubes. Dim the room lights and watch them as the amp sits there. ANy little flashes inside the tubes?

            Help with tubes?

            Thanks again for the input and wondering if you could give me some direction on how to buy tubes? (Last time I bought tubes was in the 80s if you can imagine no internet and always taking the amp to the shop for tubes)- So here's a few questions...
            1. How do I match exactly the set I have now- Do I need to pull them all to get info off of them?
            2. Assuming this is power stage problem, do I need to order power and preamp, or do they come as a set?
            3. Does this forum allow you to recommend sources?

              power tubes- suspect

              So I tried the effects return and as expected the crackle is still with us- That means power tubes if I'm understanding correctly.

              One interesting issue is that I found the ground had been set in the neutral position and before I started playing I put it in the posiitve position- The crackle was far, far less than usual, but I'm guessing that was some kind of coincidence, and not a result of the ground switch position-
              Will report more when I have it-
