  • Ampeg SVT-4 PRO Volume Drop at Gain Peak

Hi, I am looking at a friend's SVT-4, it plays fine and then suddenly the peak light (located by the gain knob) goes red and stays red and the volume is very low, almost non existent, even with gain and master dimed. When I put a cable into some of the jacks, the sound comes back and the peak light goes off. Usually when I put a cable half way (only half way for some reason) into the footswitch (Mute/Graphic EQ) jack, it goes away.
I am assuming this is a problem with a jack or fx loop. I have cleaned the jacks extensively with electronics cleaner and this helped, but the problem still happens. I am thinking it may be either a bad jack or bad solder joint (I have looked over the boards and don't see anything suspicious looking). Any suggestion what I try first or anyone know if it may be something else. Thank you!

next time, don;t plug anything into a jack, just whack the top of the amp with your fist. Plugging in applies some mechanical torque to the jacks and the circuit board, so whacking the amp would reveal a loose connection inside.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Thanks Enzo! I'll try that tonight when I get home and post the results.

Enzo, sure enough, the volume went in and out when I hit the top and back (near the jacks) of the head. So, I am assuming there is a loose connection/bad solder somewhere...do you have any suggestions what to start looking for? Should I focus on the jacks? Should I re-solder the whole board (big job)? Thanks for the input!

          Same Problem

Did you manage to sort the issue out with the LED peak light. I too have the same problem.

          regards

Yes, I did fix the problem; it was a bad solder joint. It was one of the jacks in the lower right corner (when looking at the back of the amp), but it may not be the same in your case. The amp was somewhat difficult to get apart and the bad solder was hard to find, but overall it was a pretty easy fix. I would suggest going over all of the solder on the main board. Hope that helps, good luck!
