  • Ampeg VL 502 lost all power...

So i was playing on my Ampeg VL 502 earlier today and out of left field it just lost all power. Light turned off-no sound at all.

I checked the two fuses on the back of the amp and they look fine. there's a third fuse on the inside that is solid white that im not too sure on also. I tried different outlets, different power cables...

I really don't even know where to start honestly...

the only other variable that i can think of is that i may have used a power cord from a smaller amp... i just brought the amp back from a gig and i grabbed the first power cord i found out of my bag. I hooked it up and was playing at a reasonable volume for about 10 minutes and it just lost all power...

    HELP!

Ball up your fist and wack the top of the amp, does full power come back? Or try inserting a cable into the 'preamp out' jack and the other end into the 'power amp' input jack, does full power come back?

      thanks for the responce,

i tried the whack the amp method and nothing happened.

the back of my amp doesn't have jacks that are labeled "preamp out" or "power amp."

what it does have is a "return" and a "send." as well as the output jacks for the cabinet, and a "footswitch" jack.

Is 'return' and 'send" the same thing as what you were talking about?

      thanks again

Yes, patch the send and return together.

Well, did you try another power cord then?

The UK and a few other countries have a fuse inside the wall plug that you can blow. But not in the USA, there a power cord is just a piece of wire.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

How is the sound level when you plug a guitar into the'return' jack?

nothing at all, wouldn't the tubes and stuff have to be on and lit up for something like that to work? If i didn't make that clear earlier or if thats irrelevant i apologize.

It acts just like a fuse popped but to me the fuses look fine.

Do you have access to an ohmmeter to test the fuses? Sometimes they may look good but are open. This way you can also check the ceramic (white) one as well.

I'm sure that you tried a different power cable and checked to be sure that the wall outlet was working.
