  • PV C30 Reverb

A friend brought me his Peavey Classic 30. He says the reverb works intermittently at different times. I have played it a few times for 5 minutes and the reverb seems to work fine. I cannot see any problems with a bad wire, connection, cold solder, something loose in the tank, etc. Everything seems fine. Do these amps have a history of intermittent reverb? Maybe a certain Op-Amp that goes bad or something like that? I have the chassis out, but I do not know what to do at this point.....
    Thank You

Yes that little 4558 op amp does occasionally crap out and you need to replace it. For the cost of a few cents it is worth popping one it to see. If you cant find a 4558, a TL072 will do

SOmeone reports a problem, but you don't detect a problem.

      1. then don't fix it until there is something to fix.

      2. and there is no point in starting out thinking it is a systematic problem with this amp model.

      3. Don'r rule out the possibility he might have used a footswitch with the amp that he didn;t include when he sold it to you, and the FS could have been the problem.

        1. Like I said, he says the problem is intermittent, but I don't know. I might be seeing/hearing the amp when it works, or there might not be a problem....
        2. I am not implying there is a problem with this model, I am not familiar with the PV 30 at all. I am just wondering if these amps might have a history of intermittent reverb. Like the problems of channel switching with a Fender HRDlx. I was just asking.
        3. Like I said, a friend brought this amp for me to look at, he did not sell it to me. He did include the FS, so far it has not created a problem. But this is still real new to me. Maybe I should take a peak inside the FS and/or try a different cable. I am not even sure if I have a TRS cable. But that is a good point, I will ask him if the problem always occurred when the FS was in use.

Apart from the footswitch, a common problem with those amps is the inter board jumpers, which are prone to weaken with vibration and movement over time. This can create reliability problems. But you need to pull the beast apart to check them, and it is a dog to pull apart. Another possibility is the reverb pan cable. Check the ends for good connection.

Yes, I have the boards out of the chassis. This is not my favorite amp to work on, but I suppose they get a little easier after you have done a few. All the obvious stuff looks good. The RCA plugs all seem to be making good contact, all the "Jumpers" look to be in good order, etc. I think this is the first time this has been out of the chassis since it left the PV factory. I ordered some of those Op-Amps, like you said they are an easy and cheap fix.
Enzo may have diagnosed this from the beginning....perhaps a problem with the FS, or maybe not even a problem at all. I work on a lot of gear for my friends because they just have no idea what to do. This PV would not be the first example of a "Problem" that did not really exist in the first place. You guys have seen it a lot more than I have. A customer brings in a Big Problem, only to have it be a dead battery, cold solder, loose ground wire, bad tube, etc. etc.
Anyway.....you and Enzo have given me a few places to start looking. I will let you know what I find.
