Marshal MG100 HDFX headphones don't mute the speakers

I've got a Marshall MG100HDFX amp and for some reason when a jack is inseted in the headphone socket on the front panel it doesn't cut the signal to the main speaker cabinet. the signal comes through to the headphones.

i've checked the speaker jack and he switching is working (mechanically at least)

Am I missing somthing here? it is supposed to mute the speaker output isn't it?

Any ideas on what to check?

You have to turn the master volume off. It is a multi purpose jack for recording or head phone. If you want to use as headphone to not bother anyone then turn the master volume down all the way.
