Remove tube from base

Removing the glass tube from its base, I can't seem to get the very bottom of the glass out without cracking the base. I have tried 3 and am running out of old tubes. Any tips?
Are there any types or brands that seem to come out easier?

I want to put ss diodes into an octal base.

nibble the glass carefully with needlenose pliers, crushing it bit by bit - Wear eye protection!

Or, send hoffman $1.75 to get a base from his "bias checker kit"
