  • Princeton (NR) has kind of soft bottom end

I just got a 70’s Princeton Non-reverb of CL. I dig this little amp, it’s an awesome setup for home or quite rehearsals. I don’t have a lot of first hand experience with vintage amps so I am not sure how it’s supposed to sound. I am trying to maximize what it could be so I want to update and possibly do subtle mods.

    1) I feel like the bottom end is pretty soft on this amp, even with the volume low. Could this be a case of old filter caps? It’s a single, 4 section (20/20/20/20) cap on this amp. It doesn’t really hum so I figured they were ok.

    2) Would the Stokes mod be a good one for this amp? It doesn’t really have that much grind already and I think that raising the headroom on the PI will make it even cleaner. BUT, I think it might up the output lending the amp to be more usable in more situations.

    3) I put a 25k MID control on it, I like it.

    4) Installed a trim pot for the bias, but need to turn off the trem to bias properly.

My gut reaction is "It's the speaker".
Hook it up to 12" or 15" cab.
