  • Yamaha T50C - need advice

Hi. I have this amp. I want to love it. I like the clean channel and use it for a slight break up, which I then run OD/gain pedals through. Sounds good. Can't say it blows me away but the size is good etc. I had a choke installed and installed a new speaker. It can sound really good.

The issue for me is that the lead channel sounds like shit. People swear by this channel and anything slightly high gain, sounds weak and nondescript. What are your settings on the lead channel (what's your setup with this thing).

Does your gain channel sound like shit? Mine sounds thin. Gain is there, but no punch. Really nothing. I can get great tone out of the clean channel with OD pedals, etc. Wanna love this amp.

    Pete

Sorry. Forgot to ask. If you are getting a good distorted sound from the gain channel, what are your settings/how are you using it? I simply haven't used the gain channel more than a few minutes because it was so lackluster.

My T100 gain channel sounds excellent and definitely not thin, infact I dial the low back to about 4 normally. My settings are typically like this: Low: 4, Mid:6-8 Treble: 2-4 and Presence: 0-4. Make sure your tubes are all functioning correctly (have quality 12AX7s in V1 & V2) and the powertubes are properly biased. Also that the impedence selector is at the proper setting (I've been caught by that one before ). And the volume needs to be above 1, below that and it can sound thin and weak. If all that isn't working, then something could be wrong with the amp.

        Thanks

Thanks for such a quick response. I really appreciate it. I tried your settings on the gain channel and it sounds good, not great on mine. I have good tubes that I'm swapping in and out. Right now, I have Sovteks, JJs, Jan 5751s (one in phase inverter), Tung Sols.

There's no real bite I suppose. With a tube screamer, it sounds better in terms of gain, but it still sounds quite mid rangey without the crunch. I have tried gain levels. I don't really go past 8. It doesn't really get "heavier" past eight. Just more fuzzy. By less crunch/punch, I mean that if I muffle notes, it kind of sounds weak. I don't really mind it so much, but I keeping reading about gain, gain, gain and it just sounds like a clean channel with an OD pedal going through it. Hope it makes sense.

I can be happy with this gain channel if I can dial something in that can compliment the clean channel. The clean channel with pedals is great. I just would like to be able to play a little heavy rock (George Lynch SLO/Marshall) stuff that people say this gain channel can do. I have read that it can sing notes when soloing and can also get to a Marshall sound. Not hearing that.

        Thanks again ,
        Pete

I'd guess that something is definitely wrong if that's how it sounds. Around 4-6 on preamp gain should be pretty much 80s Hard Rock levels of drive, and 7+ is highgain. Can you record what it sounds like at various preamp gain levels? If not I could perhaps do the same later this week and you can compare.
