  • Hot xformer

HI all, I've been playing through a rack setup for several years now and I recently just switched back to playing through a head. A 100 superlead I built.

I was playing it for about an hour and the power transformer got so hot I couldn't keep my hand on it for long. The amp works fine, it's just a late 60's era preamp mated to a 6L6 output section. Is it normal for one of these to get that hot and I just don;t remember that?

Thanks, Good advice, it's probably ok. I suppose I oculd ask the mfgr for typical operating temps.

Did you build it with the tubes on top of the chassis (like a super lead) or is the chassis hanging like a combo (or a V-4)? If hanging, I would think that things could get that hot without an inherent problem. Otherwise, I would double check the current draw, etc. It could have a problem or it may be underrated.

Yep just like a super lead with the tubes on top, I didn't even put it in a box yet.
