  • Silverface Champ filter cap

    Hey All-
I'm trying to find a replacement for a Mallory 40/20/20@450V rated for 85 degrees. The closest substitute I can find is a 40/20/20 @525V rated for 55 degrees. Is there any reason why this shouldn't work, and if so, does anyone know where I could find a more suitable replacement?
    Thanks

I put one of the JJ 40/20/20/20 @ 500V caps (no temp spec given, purchased at AES) into a SF Champ about ten years ago and the customer is still using the amp with no complaints.

I think that 55* rating is suspect. The only 55* spec I've seen for a cap was the low -C figure. I was just looking at some derate charts and if the high temp spec for that cap is indeed 55*C for a typical life span I would skip it.

IIRC, the original Mallory cap in that Champ was rated @ 60C, and those CE manufacturing caps are made with the same machines. I've used them on several Ampeg V series amps that get a bit warmer than the Champ... no problems. Personally, I'd say a 'lytic with no temp spec is suspect (although the JJs are made by F&T, from what I've gathered).

BTW, jadams, I have an odd feeling that I might know you... ;o)
