  • Custom Build w/ Problems

Hi everyone, my first time here and hope to get some help. I'm in the Detroit area and had a local builder build a D****E Clone with a couple mods. Killer amp but on some notes as the note decays, I get this "rumble/growl" sound. I can play other notes on the guitar and I don't get it. It seems to happen in the same range of notes and only on the decay after I pluck the string. The builder and I seem to be on OK terms but I feel like I've bugged him about some things and don't want to go there if I don't have to. Any feedback would be appreciated. This is a 50 watt combo 1x12 and I just put in an Altec.

    Thanks, Brian

Could be the filtering, the grounding for the filters, a microphonic power tube or component or a parasitic oscillation. It could also be normal "beating" if you notice that it only happens on bends when more than one string is played.

My bet would be filtering or how the filters are grounded that's causing it. It would help if we could hear a sample.

i can try to record a sample. It only happens when I play a single note and let it sustain. As the note "dies" I'll hear a wolfy growling as the note fades. I forgot how hard it is to describe sound!

Have you tried it with a speaker other than the Altec? A speaker with a slightly rubbing voice coil can cause the kind of sound you describe.

Try plugging the amp into another speaker and see if you still get that sound.

Will do, I have a cabinet I can try. I'll report back later today. Thanks for the help. I hope it's not the speaker because I think it sounds really good but I'll let you know shortly.
