I recently had my Peavey Butcher in the shop for a repair. It had been accidentally run without a load, so I was worried that the OT was fried. I was still getting (very loud) sound out of it, but it sounded kind of weak and smelled like burning electronics. The repair shop said it needed new tubes but not a new OT, which I was pretty thankful about.
So now I have it back, it sounds great. However, the other night I tried using it for bass, something I've done many times before. The bass cab is 4 ohms, and when I plugged it into the 4 ohm speaker out on the Butcher, I got sound for about 10 seconds, then it abruptly cut out. The 8 and 16 ohm speaker outs work fine, but the 4 ohm one gives me no sound whatsoever.
I'm not an amp tech by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm concerned that this could indeed be a problem with the output transformer, since the speaker jacks themselves all look fine, and would like a more educated opinion before I take it back into the shop. Any advice would be much appreciated; thanks.
