  • 5150 II tubes

I have a question concerning my 5150 II. The fifth (of six) preamp tube is not lighting up. I tried replacing it with an identical tube, and it still won't light up. I opened it up because I keep getting a wash-like noise that lasts about 3 seconds every time after I play a chord. Can anyone offer some advice?

If tube #5 was not "lighting up" the amplifier would not function.
Sometimes it is difficult to see the heater (which is what lights up)
Try going into the FX return.
Or FX Send to another amp.
This will narrow it down somewhat.

On the other 5, it is very easy to see the heater in the tube light up; of course, I could be mistaken. can you expound what you mean by "going into the FX return" or "FX send to another amp?

FX Send: plug a cable in here & plug the other end into another amp.
FX Return: Plug your guitar in here.
What I am getting at is this is an attempt at narrowing down where the problem is.
FX Send is your preamp signal.
If that sounds "whooshy" in the amp that you send to, the problem is most probably in 5150 preamp.
FX Return is directly connected to the 5150 power amp section.
If this sounds "whooshy" then you have a power amp issue.
        Divide to conquer.

          And just in case:

"FX" is an abbreviation for "Effects" So FX send means the Effects Send jack.

And I agree, if that tube was really not funtioning, then the amp wouldn;t work.
