  • Peavey Classic 50 Main transformer

    HI

Does anybody know the measures in the leads for the porwer transformer on a Peavey Classic 50 2*12. I just received one very beated and non working as part of a payment.

This transformer looks pretty bad, as if someone spill someting on the outside and have that smell only a burned part can have. I have the schematic but no information on voltages. Before start looking for shorts I want to make sure the power stage is working and if this transformer is faulty send it to rewind.

    Thank You in advance.

If it smells burnt & it oozzed, why bother with it.
    Get it rwound.
Here is the scheme for the transformer secondaries.

Because some transformers are potted, and the goops dripped out when it was made. If you ar not used to seeing that it can look like your tranny melted.

And even if bad, wouldn;t a new one from PV be cheaper than a rewind?

If the transformer melted, then it ought to be getting REAL hot or blowing fuses. The secondary wires? I'd expect something l;ike 250-300VAC between the red ones, and maybe 40v CT between the others. The thing is, whatever voltage is there is not likely to be wrong, unless it is totally out of whack or missing..

Thanks for the scheme Jazz P Bass but the pdf doesn't show the voltages, shows the rectifier stage and the jumper connections to the main board but not the voltage measurements.

Enzo, that is totally new to me, thanks for the lesson; I though that all of the transformers were made on a presurized vaccum, at least nowadays. The thing showing on this transformer is something more agressive since it seems like corroded the black paint on the transformer covers, probably it blowed fuses somewhere in time since when I received it had a 25Amp fuse (what an A$$) and I change it to the correct 3amp didn't power on. You're totally right a new one from peavey is around $80, but the little issue is I'm in Costa Rica and there's no PV service representative only dealerships. And making it an international shipping service from USA to CR being a transformer so heavy, adding the taxes and the rest of logistic pain, the final price could be around $180-$200 on my hands.

That's why I belive is better to rewind it. Either way in order to send it to rewind I need the mains and secondary voltages.

          OK.

The schematics often do not show the voltage, because due to variations in mains voltages and in loading, the voltage changes a lot.

I suggest you contact customer service and ask them. Tell them you need to know the transformer voltages and specs so you can have it rewound.

Yeap was the first idea. Sent it last week still waiting.

I'm just trying to find a secondary plan meanwhile PV answer, otherwise will give them a call.

I took the cover plates out, and it clearly is burned, the smell is extremelly strong and the paper laminations are shattered. I think this one had it's call long time ago.

            Thank You for the info.

OK, if it is burnt, it is burnt. Just be aware they sometimes look that way new. I see some where teh paint was applied over top of the potting drips.

If you need an inside tech guy at Peavey, try Gene Ford - gford@peavey.com

Hi this is what the people of Peavey send me back. Only this line seriouslly.

                Plate voltage is 410 VDC~ , Screen is 405 VDC~, B++ is 290 VDC~, B+ is 276 VDC~

Does anybody knows how can I find out the leads assigment.

                Thank You

Did you contact Gene at the factory? If not, send him a message. Explain that you need the AC voltages and currents from the transformer for rewinding purposes.

However, to get 410VDC, you need to rectify and filter approximately 290 volts AC.

Finally this is the information for the power transformer in case someone needs it.

                    power transformer P/N #70528712
                    sec1 300VAC @ .318 amps
                    sec2 41.5VAC CT @ .318 amps
                    sec3 6.19VAC @ 5.16 amps

No specifications for the output transformer.

                    Thank You All
