Hmm... I always assumed a cheap 10x was fine for guitar amp duty, but I see where you guys are going with this. I need to revisit "peak voltage"... My scope is a loaner, so, thanks!

i made myself a 1200v blocking cap insert, with BNCs for in/out. use it all the time for output plates.
basically sits between the scope and the probe.
no, it doesn't protect the voltage divider in the probe, but it DOES protect the scope, which is harder and more expensive to replace.

Word of warning on the Tenma probes: I just checked both of the ones I own, purchased at separate times. Both are shown in the catalog to be 600v probes, but the probes themselves show Max 300v on the X10 setting, 150V on the X1 setting!! It's probably too late for them to take them back from me, but they'll certainly be getting a phone call.
John: You might want to take a close look at your Tenma probes!
