  • Fender Twin amp won't power on

I'm hoping to get a few basic pointers before going to the repair shop with my amp.

I've got a twin amp from the mid 90's that I haven't used at all in several years. It's in great physical condition and has never been abused. I just got back into playing recently and went to pick it up from my parents place but unfortunately it won't power on. No lights, no sound, nothing...there is no sign that it is getting any power at all. Last time I used it there were no problem, but that was probably sometime back in 2004-2005. It hasn't been touched between then and now. So I'm wondering what the problem might be. The main fuse doesn't appear to be blown but I've read elsewhere that it can still be bad even though it doesn't appear so. I don't have much knowledge about amps but I'm hoping to get some advice before I dump 1-2 hundred on bringing it to a repair shop.

REmove the main fuse, and measure it with an ohm meter. That will tell you if it is OK.

Assuming all else OK, my first place to look is over in the rear corner on the circuit board. There is a row of push-on blades where the transformer and AC Mains wires connect. Right by the corner there should be a disc shaped part standing on edge, with TH1 printed by it on the board. IS that intact, with both legs still connected? That is the inrush limiter for the AC mains.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Thanks Enzo. I am going up to my parents place tomorrow and will test the fuse and check out the limiter if need be. Will post back and tell what I find. Thanks again for the advice!

Might this be a similar thermistor as found in the Deluxe Hot Rod? The schematic shows "C60-11, 5A" ... so does that mean 11 ohms, 5 amps?
It's not just an amp, it's an adventure!

          The ratings sound fine.
