  • troubleshooting low volume on a tube amp...

    Hi folks-

I'm working on a mid 50's rickenbacker tube amp, 2 6l6s, 5u4 rectifier. It wasn't powering up at all when I got it. I have it up and running, but i'm trying to track down a low-volume problem.

The amp sounds good, it's just about half as loud as it should be. Also stays clean nearly all the way up...makes me wonder if there is a gain-loss issue somewhere. All tubes are good.

It's grid leak biased in the front end, then goes to a bass-treble stack, then into a concertina type inverter using a 12au7. All the voltages seem to be checking out in the neighborhood of where they need to be.

Any suggestions on what to check next?

Just solved it! Turned out to be a bad joint under the circuit board, to a wire that connected some resistors in the PI to the ground. Resoldered and it sprang to life
