I have a Peavey Renown solid state amp I traded for and it's got a annoying buzz even when there is nothing plugged into it and all controls (except the volume so you can hear the buzz) are off. I bought the amp and it had a bad speaker in it so I don't know if it was copping a buzz before I put the new speaker in it and cleaned all the pots in it or not. Other than the annoying buzz it plays and sounds fine. Changing the polarity switch makes no difference at all. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks, Hippybilly

Peavey Renown Making Buzzing Noise

Make sure the 3rd prong on your power chord is indeed connected to the chassis. Use a meter continuity function. Otherwise sounds like a grounding issue or potential loose filter cap connections. Input jacks' gounds are also suspect. Bad molex connector connections, loose/cracked solder joint? Check all that out and report back. It may help to see if the hum is still there if you use the fx send or preamp out if there is one on the amp.

The volume control eliminating the "buzz" certainly points to the issue being "before" the volume control.
Here is a link to a post that has the schematic.

Do you have the Renown Solo Amp?
As Lowell indicated, try a patch cord in the pre amp out to pwr amp in jacks.
You will be jumpering them.
The pwr amp in is a normally closed circuit condition.
If the contacts are "bad" this will prove it out.
If it helps, the jack need cleaning (replacing).
If it does not help, move on.
Does the "buzz" come through on the Normal & The Lead Channels?Attached Files
