  • Gemini PL-90 Power Conditioner help

I saw this on ebay for cheap and decided to take a punt.

Opening it up shows that it's no more than a string of IEC sockets with a single cap (possibly an MOV) across the mains supply.

There looks to have been additional caps between hot/ground and neg/ground, but these have been removed.

So... Its not really doing any 'power conditioning' :0(

I'd rather just try and build some mains filtering/suppression into it than return it to the seller.

From what I've looked at online, it seems that a couple of inductors in-line with either side of the supply plus some caps from hot/ground and neg/ground on either side of the inductors would help. Like this... Jon_Risch's Web Site

    Anyone?

There are purpose made power line filter modules that do this with guaranteed performance and much lower risk of making a mistake on a component rating or wiring. But that adds to cost.

Jon's site appears to offer some good advice on picking parts. Do NOT use underrated parts, especially on the "X" and/or "Y" caps you buy, and be very, very sure you get the fusing and wiring creepage/clearances big enough, as well as testing the ground bonding when you get done. Anything else is building in a shock and/or fire hazard.
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

Cheers RG, I appreciated the advice.

I've looked at purpose-made filters, but I thought it might be easier to do it myself.

From what you suggest, it might just be easier to use one of those distribution sockets with in-built filtering, like this...
