I bought 4 a couple years ago and of the 4, 3 hummed loudly and all 4 died very prematurely. (no cathode follower use either) I had also read of many others with the same problems so i knew it was a bad design. I loved the tone however, so i was wondering if anyone knows whether they have finally addressed this or if they are still the same.

You can never get answers about things like this from the manufacturer. If i tell them i had issues and whether the new ones were changed to fix that what do you think they're going to say? If they say yes they admit thier tubes were defective. If they say no thats like saying our tubes are till going to fail on you. Manufacturers NEVER tell the unbiased truth about things like this. Never.

Mike Matthews is a pretty cool guy.
He goes to all the trade shows & is pretty standup.
I don't think BS is his bailiwick.
Won't know until you try.

Tungsol are nice sounding tubes and if you had problems with them you either hit bad ones or you have design issues. One thing is for sure - don't use them as cathode follower unless you have your heaters elevated to at least 70-80V.
Couple years ago when I noticed that EH tubes were dying as CF I contacted NS and their tech told me that their 12AX7s have +/-100V cathode to heater rating. What is strange I used many EH as CF in the past without having such problems.
So drop them an email and let's see what are they going to tell you.
