  • Ampeg Revererocket: Extra Filter Cap?

I'm new here, but have a minimal background in amp tinkering (and probably just enough knowledge to get myself in trouble).

I just acquired an early '60s Reverberocket (6sl7/7591 schematic). The tremolo circuit was known not to function and I had plans to replace old caps in the oscillation circuit and see if that'll fix it. I also figured it'd be wise to consider replacing the bypass and filter caps while I was at it. The amp functions, with the exception of the tremolo. The amp is a little noisy, with a prominent baseline hum.

While tracing the circuit, I noticed that one of the leads on the multi-cap can is not utilized (it has old solder on it, so it was at one time). In comparing the chassis layout with other amps on the net, I also notice that there's an extra 80uF/450v cap attached to the outside of the chassis. I've included Joe Piazza's schematic for reference. It appears that the amp has been modified with an 80uF filter cap instead of the original 40uF value.

I understand that the filter stage is designed to provide different voltages for different stages of the amp, but I'm unclear exactly what the roles of the capacitors and resistors specifically are in this section of the circuit and what a change in the capacitor value will have overall.

    Thanks in advance!
