  • '79 Silverface Deluxe Capacitor Question

I’m having more problems with my Silverface Deluxe Reverb. I replaced the five filter capacitors and the associated resistors. All seemed well. The amp powered up and played fine with a 5Y3 rectifier tube. I inserted a new 5U4GB rectifier tube and turned on the power. The tube flashed with a white light and I immediately turned it off.

I put the old rectifier tube back in and the amp powered up normally. When I played, however, it sounded raggedy and distorted at low volume. I began looking into things, removed the cover on the filter capacitors and found the inside of covered with a dusting of silver particles. I suspect one or more of the capacitors has failed. I’ve included some pictures below. Does it look like a/some capacitor has failed? Is it possibly related to the rectifier tube fault, or just a coincidence?

    Thanks for your help.

I think the first picture shows the error.
The first cap on the left appears to be backwards.
The cap next to it has a bad solder joint on the top lead.

Compare the board to the schematic.

Jazz P, thanks for your reply. I've checked the schematic and it seems to show those first two caps in parralel with the negative ends going to ground. Also, I believe this is the way the original caps were wired. I've attached the schematic and a "before" photo. I can't tell what am I missing?

      Thanks

O/k, so yank all of the tubes & take some of the major node voltage measurements.
(with a known good rectifier installed)
The 5U4 "may" have took a dump.
