Getting Started

Hi, I have a Peavey Prowler with a problem. It makes a loud and muddy sound when playing certain notes. It's an extra sound on top of the note and lasts longer than the note itself. So I have no idea where to start. I know a little about electronics but don't know where to start for this. Can someone recommend some books or videos to
get me started? Thanks!

Isolate the problem.

Turn the reverb down, any difference?

Disconnect the internal speaker and play the amp through some other speaker. Does it do the same thing, or not? You can pull a wire off the speaker, and plug an extension cab into the extension speaker jack, if that is more convenient. As long as we turn off the internal speaker.

With the speaker back connected, and reverb down, power on, ball up your fist and whack the top of the amp hard. The amp should not react. If the amp makes a noise or otherwise reacts, that tells us something is loose.

does the prowler have an effects loop? if so, use that as a tapping point in the signal path. check to see if the noise exists at the effects send jack. if so, the noise is being generated in the preamp. also feed some input to the effects return and see if the power amp section is to blame.

There is indeed an FX loop on the Prowler.
