  • New Rectifier for Bassman RI

I am looking to try a 5U4GB rectifier in my 1990 Bassman RI. Right now it has a GT5AR4 in it and I am looking to make it a little less brittle sounding, although it does sound pretty good.
Has anyone out there tried a new Chinese Shuguang 5U4GB with any success. I will try an American NOS if I have to, but would like to try this less expensive version if it will work well.

No experience with the Shuguang, but lots with the Sovtek 5U4GB, rarely a NEED to use NOS. You r plate current will drop by around ~5mA per tube switching from 5AR4 to 5U4...doesn't always require a rebias, unless your ears say otherwise.

Thanks MWJB. I didn't want to spend $40 plus shipping to Canada for an experiment. I will give a Sovtek a try and hope I don't need to rebias, as I have never done that for a PCB equipped amp.

I checked at the tube store in Hamilton and apparently the Sovtek 5U4G is no longer available. I see there are a couple of other brands, Russian and Czech, available so I might try one of them. I just am somewhat wary of Chinese tubes altho I will bet the GT5AR4 is Chinese.
