  • Blue Junior with raspy highs: oscillation?

A Blues Junior came in to get tubes checked and reverb fixed. The 12AX7s were worn out, and it sounds much better with new preamp tubes and new EL84s. Reverb problem was a broken wire in the tank.

It sounds a lot better now, but the highs have a harsh, raspy quality to them. Searching this forum, I saw a long thread on oscillation problems in these amps. Does this sound like a typical presentation? It sounds a bit like a bad speaker, but I connected another known-good speaker and heard the same thing.

I could, of course, get out the scope, but the client is a younger guy without a lot of money to spend on repairs.

No, but I tried the technique of moving the ribbon cable from this site, and it worked.

Somehow, after all these years, I would have thought that Fender might have learned how to build amps that don't self-oscillate, but apparently not.
