  • Mesa single rect low volume

Hey guys, just thought I would get a little advice before I start on this project tonight. I will be checking out a 50 watt Mesa single rectifier. The amp is suffering from low volume and headroom. When the output is cranked it sounds like the amp has tremolo. Tubes are brand new. I was thinking bad caps.... What do you think?

    sonic,
that would be my first thought, too. You can scope the B+ lines & determine that fairly quickly between the at rest voltage & the under load voltage. Or just bridge a good cap across the old ones one at a time, being mindful of the deadly potential voltages there....glen

I finally got to open the amp up last night. There was a 1k resistor that was burned up in the power section. I replaced this and the amp is definitely louder now. It still does not seem to sound right to me though. The amp seems to be fizzy sounding and does not have much low end. The amp still has the tremolo sound when the output is cranked. I did not have time to check the caps, but I don't think they are the problem.

Success ..... I was really making this more diffcult than it was. Loose wire coming off of the transformer going to the output section. Soldered it... Done
