Oh, if I had to guess I'd say the relatively low impedance of the pickup alone is less sensitive to environmental noise than the same pickup with a bunch of extra resistance in series from the control.

Got flourescent lights? Try turning them off. I get my guitar too close to my computer, it picks up all kinds of noise from that.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

OK, I made a new discovery, while moving Strat around with longer cord I found a reasonably quiet position in relation to the amp, then I happened to brush my finger across the jack plate and all the grainy noise left. Even when I moved back to a noisey spot when I touch the jack plate, grainy noise stops. Is my body acting as a filter??? Do I need to shield my pup cavities?

I cut all power from my breaker except for the room amp was in..., no change. Strange thing is there is a spot in the floor about 1 foot diameter, when I drag the open end of the amp cord( no guitar pluged in ) across it, amp hums like crazy. Could a heat pump cause this even though I killed the power to it.

You have shown yourself that the amp is increasing the volume of both the noise and the guitar signal, which is what it is designed to do. The amp can't tell the difference between music and noise, so it makes it all louder.

What sort of guitar are you using? What kind of pickups does it have? If you move the guitar around in different positions will the hum and noise change?
OK, problem solved, for all iterested..., it was my homes power. I invested in an AC voltage regulator/line conditioner. As soon as I plugged it in the red "faulty house wiring" light came on. I plugged up my amp and axe..., quiet as a mouse( except when I play of course ). Yeaaaa.
          Thanx for every ones input.
