RESPECTFULLY: I'm not trying to get off on the wrong foot with you, but it is totally ok to play bass through a guitar amp. You won't get the volume you would playing guitar through it because it takes more power to reproduce lower frequencies, but as long as you don't abuse it and play past clip for extended periods of time, it will work just fine. Many manufacturers use the same power amp scheme with different preamp schemes depending on whether it's a bass or guitar amp. Some of the finest recorded bass tones were bass players playing through amps intended for guitar- early Cheap Trick for one.

From the symptoms the OP describes (tapping the amp appears to make the amp turn on and off), I would be more likely to believe that he has a solder/connection problem and not likely "a capacitor that has been overheated".

He didn't buy the amp. It was given to him (see post 1), so warranty is irrelevant. He has nothing to lose.

I'm honestly not trying to belittle you or pick a fight, but none of your points seem to apply to this thread.

Edit: g-one, I didn't even notice that it was an old thread. Thanks for pointing that out.

      Hi Larry

It doesn't sound like it, but we really are a friendly group, and I welcome you to the forum.

Yes, I tried to be careful to point out that I was not trying to be disrespectful and only dispelling incorrect information. I hope it wasn't taken wrong. I also welcome you to the boards, Larry.
