  • Is there a proper way to terminate an extra transformer lead?

    Hello,

Is there a proper way to terminate an extra transformer lead?

For example, an unused 5.0vAC power supply lead or an extra output transformer tap.

I'm not asking about the obvious practical solutions... I'm asking if there is some standard that I should practice.

I currently cut the wire leads clean so no wire is exposed and then use heat shrink with a generous extra length and then bundle the wires out of the way. It seems practical and safe... but I'd like to do what ever is thought to be best practice.

Thanks for any info you can share.

    best regards,

You need to secure the lead so it cannot short to anything. SO electrical insulation of some sort, and a mechanical anchoring of some sort.

Me, I like to mount a small terminal strip or find an unused terminal, and I solder the unused lead to that. That is secure. But nothing wrong with heat shrink and a tie wrap holding the unused wire with the rest of them in harness.

It doesn;t matter how you get across the goal line, as long as you do.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

      Heat shrink tubing is good.
If it is high voltage, I'll do them twice.
And crimp the ends with a pliers while they are still warm.
      Then, yeah, anchor them.

for JPB's method the inner melt "moisture seal" shrink tube works best IMO, Mcmaster even has heat shrink/inner melt caps which give a UL rating when correctly applied but they are almost $1 each so I just use them for scary high voltages
