  • crate ftx120 power output loss!!!!

Several years ago I bought a new crate ftx120 amp and worked fine for about 3 months then one day I turned it on and the output was severely weakend. About as loud as a 10 watt amp now. I never bothered to send it in for warranty, was busy and just kind of forgot about it but now its been sitting around for years taking up space and I would like to get it playing at full power. I was wondering if anyone has had this kind of problem before or even knows were to start. I live in a small town and have no amp techs close. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Couldn't pick an easy one , now could you?
This is not a simple amp.
I have included a link to the manual.
    http://www.crateamps.com/pdf/manuals/FXT120_OM.pdf
Read the section on the effects loop & how to hook up a send & return signal.
Send a signal to another amp. If it works, scratch a preamp problem.
Return a signal fom another amp. If that works, scratch a power amp problem.
If you could possibly narrow the problem down to the preamp or the power amp, that would be a good start.

And don't forget to try just jumpering the break jacks with a spare cord to see if the jacks themselve are the problem.

Be aware that both are "stereo" jacks.
        TRS.

As mentioned above, the insert jack is the quickest way to isolate the problem, and could be the cause of the problem. With the unit turned off, plug a guitar cable in and out of the insert jack several times. Then see if the problem has got better or worse.
If you have some contact/control cleaner you could spray some into the insert before you plug the cable in and out of it.
The insert jack is a switching jack, when nothing is plugged in to the insert, the tip (fx return) is connected to the ring (fx send) by the jacks internal switch.
If those switch contacts get dirty/oxidized, it will cause the power loss you are experiencing.
