  • 5f1 Power Tube problem

I have a 5F1 build that has been running fine for years with an nos 5y3 and JJ 6v6 and 12ax7. Its at about 9W, 293v on the plate, .0314 ma at idle. The problem is if I use any other 6v6, it sounds normal at low volumes but when I hit it hard I get arcing inside the tube with corresponding loud bad noise.

I've tried several nos and current production 6v6's and the same thing happens. Output transformer is 8 ohms and so is speaker.
I know that JJ 6v6 are a bit more robust than normal but my voltages seem to be within reason. The 12ax7 has 130v on the plates and 1.1 v going to the cathode resistors.

Is this a bad output transformer? if so why is the JJ immuen?

    Thanks.
