  • Ampegs are weird!~

okay, forget the odd tubes, the strange designs, bizarre controls......somehow they ,manage to sound good.
I've got an OLD one that looks similiar to a 625.
I had refurbed it before, my friend sold it, and it got damaged in shipping.
The customer sent back only the power amp section, and I managed to figure out what to jumper to similate the switches that are mounted on the preamp section.

So before firing it up I take a few readings...
extremely high resistance readings on OT primary (5M)..open right?
well I put a load on, fire it up and it's screaming out 20-25 watts from 2 Cathode biased 6L6's...(originally it used EL37's!!!!)

power it down...and I get normal resistance readings from one side of OT (85ohm), and ~ 10K on the other side???

    .....what da' fudge?

Still sounds fishy, dewire it and see what you get.

I always have an old Bassman OT on the bench. I clip it into an amp in place of whatever was there originally to A/B verify the old part bad. For just testing good/bad, we don't care if the impedances are off. SImple substitution of something even remotely close should answer other questions.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Assuming that your probes are not being fooled by oxide solder.

      The OT had OD

Both sides should be equal to some respect of 85 ohms
