    For all the crap we went through, it remains that the most likely cause of the failure was a power tube failing.
    Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

      Your little capacitor probably was the root of the problem. After repairing cheap TVs for years, I first suspect the small electrolytics near the heat sinks of the switchers as the culrpits in a no start or unstable operation in a SMPS. They should be replaced with 105 C replacements.
      Resoldering is a great way to distract yourself from hair pulling. Cracks in the solder start from the surface of the board and work their way up. By the time you can see a crack in one joint, You can figure that all the joints are suspect. A complete resolder will add stability to any board over 5 or 6 years old. Make sure to inspect your work with a magnifier before you power it up.
