    It's funny, with the initial problem I'd flicked the Pre amp tubes when they were suspect. Didn't repeat the procedure with the Powers this time though. It's nice to learn these lessons though.

      Jazz, I don't care what you do with your 'tube', just don't do it around me!

      Tapping the power and rectifier tubes will often show up physical faults that can otherwise go unnoticed. Sometimes it will only work after the tubes have been heated up and the internal elements can expand, sag, droop or swell.

        As a starving musician I have several times pulled output tubes at a gig to roll them in a bar towel and toss them a carpeted floor to get through the night after blowing a fuse. I don't recommend it, but some times desperate situations require desperate measures, lol. Never with EL84s though. 6L6s. Also, helps to be drinking.
