  • Valve orientation tab broken... recommendation

    Hi,

This might seem like a daft question
I've got a mesa boogie dual rec with 5U4G rectifier valves.

The central tab on those both rectifier valves has broken off.

Obviously the amp still works. But I guess there's a danger that in valve rec mode they could be fitted the wrong way and cause damage?

When the spigot is snapped off an octal valve, I tend to put a line of Tippex on the valve base and the chassis so I can see the correct orientation.

If you can guarantee that you are the only person who is ever going to mess with the amp in future that may be OK.

Otherwise spend £20 on a new valve...

Well it's for a customer so I couldn't guarantee it. Tbh, I'm just polling opinion before recommending he spends the 40 on two of the beggars...

Thanks Joe, that's really useful... hopefully I can find some in the UK.

Carve the line in with a dremel or similar, warn the customer and show him the carvings. Offer new tubes but explain cost isn't needed with markings. If he then sticks them in wrong, you get a PT replacement job coming up.
