I picked up a Fluke Mini IR Thermometer from a guy selling several on CrazyList for $45. I used it to find areas that need extra insulation in my basement.
I realized I could use it to see if tubes were up to temp before testing or biasing.
Then I had an amp with a heavy distortion problem. I shot the EL84 plates with the laser (in roughly the same area) and while both were hot to the touch, one tube was close to twice as hot as the other. Screen grid resistor had opened up. 5min fix.
Thought I would pass this along.
