  • Volume fading in and out on a Peavey Vyper 75w combo amp

I have a friends Peavey Vyper 75w amp to see what's going on with it. It's a solid state amp, BTW.

When I use his guitar, the volume fades in and out. When I use my cheaper one's it's noticeable. When I use my best guitars (all guitars using the same cable) it's not as bad. Now, I get no differences with my amps using any of my guitars except for tone differences, but when I plug in his old fender strat, which looks like it's been beaten like a friend who owes him money, the whole thing just goes to crap.

My thoughts are the transformer is going out since my Crate GLX1200H did something similar, but did it much quicker.

Do any of you gurus or people who've recently stayed at a Holiday Inn have any ideas?

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn lasst night, but I did see this post:

    The dreaded Switching Jack Problem

maybe your issues are the same as the ones I've had with my VOX AD60VTX

How would your transformer know which guitar was plugged in? It would have to know that to act differently for each guitar.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

I think the amp respects the better-quality guitars

... but seriously, the difference must be subtle.

Hmm... I'll look into it more when I can get the file to open, but it does make more sense based on what else I've read given the symptoms I described.

Right now, I'm searching out this problem for a friend's son and the little dolt is getting attitude with me because I didn't fix it yet (and it's a favor). Looks like he might be picking it up and heading to some place to lose a few bucks if he wants it fixed.
