Had a HotRod Deluxe come in today. Customer says it goes "all nuts" sometimes when he digs in. I probe around with my chopstick, and make it switch into the drive channel by tapping hard around the foot switch. Yep, that's it. Dirty switched jack. Pull the jack, it's the same as the input jacks, so I clean them both and swap. I really don't like the idea of sending critical signal through these switching jacks. Talk about expected failure rate...

OK boss, it's not signal, you got me there. But it's still circuit critical in that it decides which way the channel switches, and is no less important. But you knew that didn't you sensei? It's weird, because it WAS working fine.....

Sure, but I also know that the vast majority of them work fine their entire lives. And if we use the footswitch this problem can't occur. ANy jack switch can fail or get dirty. And no matter what, SOMETWHING in the amp will have the job of selecting a signal path, and whatever that thing is, it can fail. SO if we make the jack work a relay, the relay can fail. If we use JFETs, they can fail.Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
