  • JCM 2000 DSL100 crackling and popping... sometimes.

Ok... this damn DSL 100 (I hate these things) has an intermittent problem. The guy swears it never did it until I re-tubed and biased it... that's what I get for not thoroughly testing it before I benched it. Anyways... new Winged C EL34's and Tung Sol preamp tubes... Biased at 83mA... took a few HOURS of burn in to get it to settle down but it did finally. Sounded great on my bench. Gave it back... popping and crackling and now I look like a jerk. I got it back, fired it up before I took it apart, sounded GREAT. Took it apart, chopsticked the hell out of it and the best I can tell is, about half of the time I take it off standby, it pops and crackles. Sometimes a little bit, sometimes a lot, usually goes away after a few seconds, and usually after I tweak one or the other of the two knobs next to the jack (Gain/Vol)... When I had it apart, I wiggled all the spade connectors near that part of the board and could not get it to replicate... maybe I'll just solder all of 'em! Anyway, any advice? I don't fix amps for a living, but I have a lot of electronics experience (AS degree electronics and radio tech in Army) for a carpenter... heh.
I guess I'm gonna find a new replacement plastic-assed input jack for it and start there... But anyone run into this on one of these? I really hate circuit board amps...
Btw, the hum you hear is because I had the amp about halfway up with a Strat plugged in and a rag over the strings... no pedals, the cord is good, I tested it while my brother wiggled the crap out of it. And the sound is the same as when my friend fired it up with his guitar/cord/speaker cab.

I'm having a similar problem with a 73 Super Reverb. I replaced all of the 1 watt resistors and it quieted down a whole lot, but still has a sound similar to bacon frying when on standby, but a lot quieter that it originally was. It was unusable onstage until I replaced the 1 watt resistors, I had to turn it off completely during breaks it was so loud. I'm still searching, it's been chopsticked to hell and back too and no plastic jacks...I might keep an eye on this thread to get some ideas...anyway, replacing those resistors did a whole lot of good. (all original carbon comp jobs) When I started checking around for ideas, I read in several places that was where to start. I've also swapped out every tube in it, one at a time, no difference.

I would first check/change C46. It's known to fail in these amps. Also, there's a wealth of knowledge/bad news HERE.

Oh... after looking at the schemo, I had already yanked C46 as it was crispy and enigmatic. Good website though!
