  • Orange Rocker 30 OT Replacement

    OK guys...

I have an Orange Rocker 30 that sounds fantastic just like it is. However, I tried to play out with it and found it a little thin and getting lost in the mix. Just not quite loud enough.

FYI, the output is cathode biased 2xEL34.

So.... I have Classic Tone 50W OT that is for a Marshall Plexi/JCM application that's well suited for a P/P pair of EL34's. I wired that guy in there, not seeing any real harm, and it absolutely thumps now.

I see no harm in it, but I am a hobby guy with a fair amount of tube experience but nothing like some of you guys who really live and understand this stuff.

What (if anything) is the real risk of having a larger OT in the amp? I have played it for several hours now with no excessive heat, strange behavior, overtones etc.

Well, the Classic 50 watter has more iron.
That in itself may be providing a better bass response.
    Hard to tell what happened.
The Orange OT was crap/ the Classic is simply better.
As long as the impedance ratio is the same, there is no harm in using a higher wattage transformer.

Thanks for the input. Yes, the Orange OT is a tiny little thing that sounds as thin as it looks. The overall character of the tone is really nice, just sounds little.

I used Classic Tone iron in a Plexi clone that I built so I knew it was a quality piece.

I figured since the impedance was correct to the EL34 pair it would be OK. Just wanted to get some input from more experienced folks.
