  • Old Ampeg V2

A buddy dropped off an old Ampeg V2 the other day to do some maintenance.
    Here are the symptoms:
-you start hearing the amp at around 7 or 8 on the volume..and it's a real low 'overdriven' sound. When you play, you can see the tubes glow bright with each strum.
-Tubes look original, so I planned on ordering new ones.

I'm guessing caps might have to be changed, but what else could cause that weak volume?
The amp looks like a pain to work with inside...

You might consider modding it to use different tubes or a kit like this. http://bit.ly/16vc4L0
Great amp btw. And.. As Enzo would say, troubleshoot and figure out what is wrong before you just start throwing parts at it. It could be a museum piece with the original tubes still good.

Are you plugged into the correct speaker jack?

I love those amps. They're incredibly versatile when working correctly.

Lots of things could be wrong but I would check the usual suspects first. Tubes and caps.

I have 3 VT-40s (same amp in a combo package) and I'm running JJ 6L6's in two of them. The other still has the original power tubes. 6K11's are still out there and not that hard to find. But test first before you buy new tubes.

I rebuild the power sections and bias supply on mine just for some peace of mind. That might not be necessary in your case but test these sections to make sure they're not out of spec.

If your power tubes pulsate their glow with the music, I now fear you hay have a problem with the output. Hopefully not the transformer, but do check the output jack and wiring as well as the speakers and speaker cords you are using.
