Happy NEW YEARS!!!!!!
Hey I have a model 8080 Valvestate doing the same thing as far as blowing the outputs. I see this thread just suddenly stopped in October 2013. Pardon me if I'm hijacking but after 6 months I'm guessing it might be OK? Was this ever resolved? Did Valvehead just give up? Inquiring minds want to know! I'm a novice and been racking my brain with this thing. It actually baffled a tech friend also. I have shotgunned out all of the transistors including the outputs, all diodes including the zeners, bridge rectifier, and several key resistors in the power circuit. Just did several voltage readings throughout plugged discreetly into the wall. If anyone is interested in assisting I will gladly post my results. My results at TR8, 9, 10 were much different from his readings.
As Enzo had pointed out the DC offset on the output was only 350mv. That is not a horrible reading and the amp probably would have maintained and worked in theory. Valvehead was trying to get the offset even more balanced than that and just could not get it lower. At that point nothing was shorting out and the amp, as far as I can tell, was working. I later saw this amp for sale on eBay "as is", so I am pretty sure he just sold it.
Your amp sounds like you have similar or different problems and it would be best to just start a new thread here... best regards. Post results on different thread.
