Ah I did the lift R39 with the previous (R 49, 53, 55) still with their legs cocked up. Shall I retry doing R39 up alone, with these back in.. or go on to try just gnd btm of MV.

(Do you mean remove the Jfet from the board altogether?
And when referring to 'top' or 'btm' are you/ is one referring directly to the schematic using these 'directions'? ie btm in MV's case here would be the Q6 side.

Yup.
Basically you will remove the Jfet & jumper the Drain (bottom of the MV pot) to the Source (ground).
Use your ohmeter to verify the connections.

Well finally this sort of works- JazzP your suggestion is excellent. The Vol ch1 works with the MV (& tho some odd tiny noises? it is pretty quiet and defo useable, with MV no further than 1) and the ch2 also/ som other odd small noises introduced but liveable with/ again MV no further than 1. But as its a 50w monster and I keep at home, and it behaves itself.. it will be fine.

Tremendous help JP- cant thank you (et al) enough. Off for a curry and a few pints. Phew!

That's great if this thing is now useable for you. Was definitely not an amp to be learning on and your perseverance is commendable.
A few years down the line with more experience you may want to go back into it and have a look with a scope and you may get it beat. If it's a pc board fault it may involve cutting traces and installing jumpers, but if you can pinpoint the source with a scope you will be 90% of the way there.
Meanwhile you can enjoy it and work on more repair friendly items to get your chops up.
And don't forget if you need higher volumes and the noise is objectionable, you can always connect another preamp into the FX return/power amp in jack as there is no problem with your power amp.

Cheers g-one terrific help/ tho couldnt locate the sod of a noise Ive learnt a heap alongthe way. Yes good plan- in due time maybe I can come back to it with an oscilloscope, whatever the dickens that is, and poke some more. I dodntknow I could bypass the preamp and just use its power amp via the FXrtn.. thats intresting. Much oblidged to yous, and I like your funny pink man with bulbous pointy-earhorns too.
